391 Square kilometers of mesmerizing wild life, that’s what Kumana National Park offers its discerning visitor. Located in the deep south of Sri Lanka, Kumana is famous for its migratory waterfowl and wading birds. Thousands of birds migrate to Kumana National Park specially in the months of April to July. A whopping 255 species of migratory birds have been recorded during this season. Hence it is an important bird nesting and breeding land in Sri Lanka. It was previously called Yala east national park but changed to Kumana National park in 2006. Average annual temperature stands at 27.3 degrees. Pelicans painted storks, spoonbills, white ibis, herons, and hundreds of little cormorants are frequent at Kumana National Park. Safari’s at the park is recommended either early morning or late afternoon as during the extreme heat of the afternoon, the animals tend to venture deep into the forest for shelter and we believe a good old afternoon nap.
